It is much taller than any of the other front sights on my other 1903s. I do believe it has a National Match front sight. The bolt is shiney, if that means anything. I am not certain of your description of the "polished rails" means. It is located at the 6:00 position on the muzzle, if that helps any. It might have a "star gauge" stamp, but it is hard to decipher exactly what it is.
#Unertl usmc sniper scope serial number#
The serial number on the scope is #1216 - and I can testify they had a very small set of stamps at the factory! I did go down to my vault and get the rifle so I can provide more details. Any particular views or details you want to see? I will try and get some photos posted tomorrow. I will be more than happy to post a reference pic.īut I would be more than glad to help in anyway possible. If you are unsure of what the rails being polished means. This is usually a really easy thing to look for when evaluation a new rifle. So it should have for instance the rails polished. But the Marine docs state that all Unertl Snipers started as a NM. I didn't look up your serial in the SRS yet.
Because the 1940 Marine NM shipment was put together at Frankford Arsenal according to the MArine docs.
If the barrel is the original star guaged barrel to the receiver, most often they are 3/39's with a very distinct star guage stamp. So mostly we find them in the mid to high 1.52 serial range, and the low 1.53 range. So we have a pretty good amount of info from this shipment.īut the Marines made a stipulation in this order that the rifles should be of the newest production and barrel date. The 1940 shipment of a 150 NM rifles rifles to the Marines is one of the most common found in the conversion to Sniper. See the Marines only received NM rifles in certain years. But as of right now, it is not in a known range of rifles. What can you tell me about serial number - 1514630? And even some of the rifles in books are not real.Ī new book honestly should be written on them. Some of the accepted info in books and such on these rifles is incorrect. We found so many new documents on these rifles at the ARchvies, so it's given us a lot better image of what a real rifle was. And many more have them and think they are real, and they aren't. Some have them, but choose to not be known. My best guess, I personally think about 50 are probably out there that are known. There are mentions in Korea that make it seem less than 200 were still serviceable in the Marines. And most Divisions only had around the 50 number. As only the first four Marine Divisions had them. And it really doesn't seem many more than this initial number were built.
It seems only 250 shipped to the Pacific before the program was cancelled.
The Marines started with a pool of a 1047 rifles that could have became snipers. But a few I have seen off Larry's old list, they are now considered fake. Which Many on his list are some of my 20ish I know of. Larry Reynolds around 2000 compiled a list of about 40. What I mean by that is, I've seen the rifle, and have detailed photographs of it. I know personally of about 20 something real ones. How hard is it to find an original? Are they harder to find than the A4? This is probably the favorite rifle that I have ever owned, and I would love to know the history of it. And I think it's very possible this was one was fielded as it's in pretty rough condition. I believe this rifle had it's scope mounted between Jan 1943 and May 1943. After these rifles had their barrel replaced they would not be used by the teams anymore, but were sat aside to be used in All Marine Divisional Matches against each other. This one probably had it's barrel replaced at the end of the 1939 or 1940 season. At the end of each season, the rifles were returned to the Depot and if the barrel was worn out, the Marines would replace the barrels and the rifles would be known as Special Target rifles after. The National Matches purchased by the Marines were all used by the Active and Reserve team in competitions. It started life as a National Match which the Marines bought in either the 1935 or 1936 season. This is a Marine Special Target rifle that was converted to a Marine Unertl Sniper rifle post January 1943. I have never posted this over here, but I'm bored today.
